Uncle Tom's Cabin
This was a story written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She wrote it to draw attention to the issues in slavery. This turned into a book, with other stories written by her in it. -
republican party
Former members of the Whig Party established a new party that would oppose to the spread of slavery. After the Missouri Compromise dissolved the Whigs did too. They then became the Republicans. It gained supporters from the North, and their first candidate for president as John C. Freemont. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This allowed the people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether or not to allow slavery. This act would repeal the Missouri Compromise. -
Bloody Kansas
This was a series of acts of violence. This was over the legality of slavery in the US. This followed the Kansas- Nebraska act. The antislavery people and the proslavery people fought over whether or not the states should allow slavery. -
Brooks- sumner incident.
Southern Congressman Preston Brooks beat Northern Senator Charles Sumner in the halls of congress. This was due to the rising tensions in the argument of slavery. The notherners were afraid slavery would resurface where it had been illegal. -
Election of 1856
This election was between James Buchanan and John C. Freemont. Buchanan won. The Previous president also tried to rerun, his name was Millard Fillmore. -
Dred Scott.
He was a African American man, who was a slave. He sued for his and his families freedom due to being moved to a free state and his master dying. The court ruled he could not sue due to him being "property" and he was not considered in a free state anymore due to the Missouri compromise. -
LeCompton Constitution
This was the 2nd of 4 proposed constitutions for Kansas. This was drafted by proslavery advocates and included rights for slaveholding states and excluded free blacks from its bill of rights. It would basically gaurentee slavery within the state. -
John Brown
He was an abolitionist that believed that he was an instrument of God. He went on the try and raid a ton and free the slaves within it. He got caught and convicted of treason, then was hanged. -
House divided speech.
This was an address given by Abraham Lincoln. This was after he accepted the nomination o be the US senator of Illinois. He said that we can not stay divided between pro and against slavery. One side will have to fall. -
Lincoln- Douglas debates. ( Freeport Doctrine)
Douglas argued that any territory could prevent slavery by passing a legislation. They could make it difficult for slave owners to recapture runaway slaves. They just had to fail to provide police support for the slave owners. -
Harpers ferry
This was the first town John Brown and a group of abolitionists went to to raid and free the slaves. In this raid he was captured and convicted of treason, then hanged. -
secession
There was one huge case of this. 11 states withdrew from the union, all slaveholding states. This lead to a dissolution of the union. they did this shortly after Lincoln became president. The states also withdrew because the antislavery campaign was growing. -
election of 1860
This election put Abraham Lincoln against Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. The main issue of this election was slavery and the states rights. Lincoln won this election. -
Lincolns 1st Inaugural address.
this was part of taking his oath as president. In this speech he extended the Olive Branch to the south, but also mentioned that he would enforce federal laws in the states that chose to seceded. He promised not to interfere with slavery where it already existed.
