    Uncle Toms Cabin
    Uncle Tom's cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in early 1852. The book consisted of slavery and in that book, she talked about how slaves were treated by the south. In the book she also writes about how states should become anti-slave states to help out African Americans and women who were not treated correctly. The book also helps slave states realize the injustice of slavery. This book was said to be banned in America because it was seen as controversial.
  • Republication Party 1850's

    Republication Party 1850's
    During the Republication Party Northern states and Southern states disagreed about how slavery affected society and considered the abolition of slavery. Around the time of 1858, a very powerful guy named Thurlow Weed joined the Republication Party. In 1860 the Republican Party adopted a moderate stance on slavery and became against the expansion of slavery.
  • Bloody Kansas

    Bloody Kansas
    This event took place when Pro-slavery, Free-staters and abolitionist were all occupied in Kansas. Shortly violence broke out between pro-slavery and anti-slavery for a while making Kansas into a free state on January 29th. This event was also important because it shaped American politics and contributed to civil war by deepening the divide in North-South views on slavery. While fighting 55 people died.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    During the Kansas Nebraska Act the Missouri compromise created two new territories and allowed popular sovereignty in those territories. This act also outlawed slavery above the 36''30' latitude in Louisiana territories but also opened nation struggles over slavery in the west. This helped the idea of a civil war by raising the possibility of slaveries expansion into non-slave territories. After this act the final decision was residents in each territories got to decide slave or non-slave state.

    Brooks-Sumner Incident
    After the senate had rested for the day, Brooks enters an older room where he found Charles Sumner putting up postal frank to copies of his crime against Kansas speech Brooks slammed his cane into Charles Sumners head. This all happened because of Sumners criticizing slaveowners (including Brooks). This caused Sumner to not fully recover his injuries, but he did become a major part of the senate and fought for rights for African Americans.

    During this election red denotes states won by Fremont, blue denotes won by Buchanan then lilac denotes states won by Fillmore. The winner of this election James Buchanan defeated republication John C Fremont with 174 electoral votes.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American man. After struggling for years Dred Scott and his wife Harriet Robinson were sued for freedom for themselves and their two daughters, Eliza and Lizzie in the court case Scott v. Sandford in 1857. This case led to the divide of the north and south over slavery was it unconsitutional. The court ended by saying that Scott was not a citizen. His life ended by him, and his family being bought by the Blow family, leading to his freedom.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    Lecompton Constitution
    Supposably this never went into effect, but it got its name from Lecompton Kansas, where it was drafted. This document allowed slavery in the state of Kansas if approved. This document failed and was not allowed because it made people question if it was good or okay when it came to peoples will. Lecompton was also where the Civil war took place and where slavery slowly began to end.

    House Divided Speech
    This speech was taken place at the republican convention, Illinois. This speech was given by Abraham Lincoln because Dred Scotts case had open doors to slavery so it would be illegal in the north and all the territories it expanded into. In this speech Lincoln identified slavery as a moral and a political issue and he also mentioned that it threatened the continued existence of the United States.
  • Lincoln Douglas debates

    Lincoln Douglas debates
    During Douglas debates he talks about slavery, where it should and should not be allowed and how to deal with it. Douglas also mentions the compromise of 1850 and how it was an example of popular sovereignty. During debates slavery and its effect on politics and mostly society was talk about or debated. His debates were what he was most known for even though he didn't get elected when it came to Abraham Lincoln but in 1860 Douglas was elected.
  • Harper Ferry

    Harper Ferry
    This attack led by John Brown, an abolitionist led 21 men down what is now west Virgina to take federal armory and encourage people to join him and his 21 men and be against slavery, this was not successful but less than 8 years later slavery is finally illegal. During this attack Brown also captured prominent citizens. This ended in the first successful American railroad, the education of formerly enslaved citizens.
  • John Brown

    John Brown
    John Brown was known as a guy that was risk his own life to end slavery, so was hung in 1859. For slavery John Brown led a raid from Kansas across the border to Missouri where he murdered a slave owner and set his slaves free (this was supported by Fedrick Douglass). Brown wanted freedom for the slaves because he believed slavery to be unnecessary cruel, evil. John Brown was one of the reasons slavery doesn't exist today because he led a path for Lincoln to follow.

    During this election President Lincoln a part of the republication party won in a 4-way contest even though he received less than 40% of the popular vote but he very easily won the electoral vote over Stephen Douglas. This election out of all others was important because it shaped US history on if slavery should come to an end. During this election presidents discussed National Tariff, The homestead act of 1862, railroads and slavery. This election ended by declaring Lincoln President.
  • Secession of 1860

    Secession of 1860
    During the Secession of 1860 South Carolina declared their secession from the United States then over months other southern states would follow. The whole purpose of declaring secession from the US was to protect their state rights and the institution of slavery for their future. This secede was not supported by all Southerns it contained mostly soldiers because of their promise to remain loyal. After a little while James Buchanan declared this act illegal.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural

    Lincoln's 1st Inaugural
    Lincolns 1st inaugural address took place at the United States Capitol consisting of 703 words. During his address he addressed points that consisted of him wanting the union to stay together and prevent a civil war because he believed if they did go into war Britian and France would have their attacks on them. During his address he also says that ideals are worth dying for and the ones who died to protect ideal need to be lived up to. He also mentions slave states and how slavery is not needed.
