Louisiana Purchase
The United States acquired territory extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains for $15 million. Napoleon Bonaparte, the leader of France, sold the land for a low price due to financial trouble resulting from the war. Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States, bought the land in order to expand America. The purchase doubled the size of the United States and furthered westward expansion. -
War of 1812
The United States and Great Britain fought over Britain’s interference of American shipping to Europe, impressment of American sailors, disagreements over trade, and western expansion. The war resulted in Great Britain capturing Washington D.C and setting the White House on fire. -
Battle of New Orleans
The Battle of New Orleans was the last battle between the United States and Great Britain in the War of 1812. The battle was fought because the news that the signing of the Treaty of Ghent had not reached Louisiana. The British was hoping to capture New Orleans since it is a huge trading port for America. This war was significant because it shifted American's perspective of the war. -
Monroe Doctrine
President James Monroe created the Monroe Doctrine to warn European powers to stay out of Western Hemisphere affairs. The main points of the Monroe Doctrine were that the U.S would not interfere with European affairs, the U.S would not interfere with existing European colonies in the Western Hemisphere, no new colonies could be claimed in the Western Hemisphere, and any act to colonize new territory in the Western Hemisphere by European states would be viewed as a hostile act against the U.S. -
1st Public Railroad System
Construction on the first public railroad in the United States began on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. The railroad was important because it allowed trade to be more accessible and affordable and furthered westward expansion. -
Mexican War
The Mexican War was fought between the United States and Mexico, it was triggered by the disagreement about the boundary between the United States and Texas. Following America's win, Mexico had lost most of California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. -
California Gold Rush
The news of gold being found in Sutter's Mill in California attracted thousands of Americans to move to California to search for gold. -
Confederate States were formed
After Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, the South Carolina legislature felt threatened since Abraham Lincoln was a well-known opponent of slavery. South Carolina and 10 more states decided to secede from the United States and form the Confederate States. They elected Jefferson Davis as president. -
Civil War
The war was fought between The United States(North) and the Confederate States (south) over disagreements about slavery, states' rights, and westward expansion. The Confederate surrendered in 1865 but resulted in being the deadliest war fought in America. -
Spanish American War
The conflict was between Spain and the Unites States, the war resulted in the end of Spanish colonial rule in the U.S.
