President Andrew Jackson signed this act, effectively forcing Indian tribes to give their terrritory to American expansion. Cherokees tried to keep their land, however, they were unsuccessful resulting in the Trial of Tears. -

War between Confederate states and the Union army broke out in the nation over the status of slaves. Confederate, or Southern, states needed slaves to work their plantations. The Union, however, did not see eye to eye with them. Ultimately, the South ran out of supplies, thus leaving the victory to the Union.
