    The case Marbury v Madison helped establish the principle of judicial review. This added to the system of checks and balances which was created to keep any one branch of he federal government from becoming too powerful.
  • Lewis and Clark Expodition

    Lewis and Clark Expodition
    Lewis and Clark were both going on a funded venture to find out if there was a route into the Pacific Ocean from the Missouri and Colombia Rivers. They both found a woman named Sacagawea and helped her give birth to her baby. In return for there help she showed them around Missouri and acted as a translator. They likely wouldn't have made it without her.

    Robert Fulton and Robert R. Livingston set the Clermont, the first steamboat, up the Hudson river loving shipping problems. This took a four day trip down to 30 hours.
  • Embargo Act

    This Act stopped American exports by prohibiting U.S. ships to sail to foreign ports. Jefferson and Madison thought this would get European nations to stop violating American rights. However they were mistaken and French and British were not upset about their loss of trade with America.

    Henry Harrison took 1,000 troops to Prophetstown and defeated all the Indians under Tecumseh. He was the leader of the Shawnee Indians who was very upset about "whites" taking their land and forcing them out.

    This was the first time congress declared war. Britain had agreed to stop interfering with American shipping but Madison and the Republicans believed that only war would end the practice of impressment.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Britain and America both agreed to end the war and return each side's prisoners and the former boundaries. This was good for Americans because Britain still controlled many areas of land and good. There were also London merchants who wanted to renew trade with America.

    Clipper ships were built for speed and twice as fast as older merchant ships. They were long with sleek hills, flat bottoms, taller masts and more sails. They were very useful when transporting Asian tea leaves because they had to be at the markets quickly after harvest.
