Judiciary Act of 1801
A law pasted by the United States establishing a court system. Creating six circuit courts and sixteen new circuit judgeships. -
Louisiana Purchase
Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans, but Napoleon gave Jefferson the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million. Jefferson went on with the deal with out congress approval. -
Marbury v. Madison
John Adams lost reelection and wanted to keep his party in control over the judicial branch, so he commissioned his judges before leaving. Marbury was one of the appointed judges, but Jefferson told Madison to not send the commission. Marbury sued Madison and asked the Supreme Court to force Madison to deliver them, but the court declined the request to a 4-0 vote. -
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to find out what was in the Louisiana Territory. Lewis and Clark helped a Native American woman named Sacagawea. She decided to help them on the trip for helping her. -
Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin was invented to help the removal of the cotton from the plant. Invented by Eli Whitney. Slavery increased because of the invention. -
Steamboat
Steamboat helped the transportation go up and down the river. The problem was that it would be a slow trip going at 5 miles per hour. -
Transatlantic Slave Trade
Jefferson's administration prohibited the import of enslaved Africans in the U.S; however, 110,000 enslaved people were still being smuggled in. -
War of 1812
British took sailors from the U.S. ships and forced them to fight for the British Navy. Citizens of the U.S. were also mad at Britain because the British were getting Native Americans to attack settlers. -
Railroads
A form of transportation that was faster, efficient, and versatile. Encouraged westward expansion. -
Mexican-American War
War fought between Mexico and the United States over the territory of Texas. United States won giving them the Texas territory.
