By this time, the U.S. had 22 states (11 free and 11 slave states). There was a lot of tension in Congress between the anti-slavery and pro-slavery factions. Missouri wanted to be admitted as a slave state. To appease both sides, Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. -

Texas volunteer soldiers took control of the small mission the Alamo. Two hundred Texas soldiers held off the Mexican army until ultimately they were overtaken. "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying battle cry of the Texas Revolution. -

James Marshall discovered gold at the sawmill he was building. Word spread about the discovery of gold and thousands rushed to California in the hopes of finding gold themselves. The excitement of the discovery eventually fizzled out and brought about the end of the Gold Rush period. -

Abraham Lincoln was elected as president of the U.S. There was a strong disagreement between slave and free sates around this time and Lincoln's election was when many of the slave states began to leave the Union. The last battle of the Civil War took place at Palmito Ranch in Texas, and it was a Confederate victory. -

This was the first major battle of the American Civil War. It was fought near a small river called Bull Run and it was a Confederate victory, that drove the Union troops to retreat back to D.C. -

This act said any American citizen could claim up to 160 acres in the western territories if they went there and settled on the land and farmed for 5 years. -

A ceremony was held on the battlefield in Gettysburg to honor the fallen soldiers who fought at this battle. President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, which spoke on the principles of humanity and equality. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
Lincoln went to a play when he was shot by the actor and confederacy sympathizer, John Wilkes Booth, at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. Lincoln later died from his injuries. -
Andrew Johnson becomes President
Johnson becomes president after Lincoln was assassinated. He had been the vice president for 42 days when he became president. He was the 17th president of the U.S., and his term ended on March 9, 1869. -

Ulysses S. Grant becomes President

Battle of Little Bighorn
Lakota and Sioux warriors were fighting against the U.S. army because they wanted them to stop taking their land, but the U.S> army wanted to remove them from their land. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led a small army to confront the indigenous warriors, and this resulted in a battle. The warriors defended themselves, and this was an Indigenous victory.
