  • Louisiana Purchase

    Napoleon needs money for war, sells the Louisiana purchase to the US for $15 million. Jefferson buys through a treaty.
  • Treaty of Cession

    Grants the French Territory of the Louisiana Purchase to the US.
  • 12th Amendment

    Provided the procedure for electing the President and Vice President.
  • Burr and Hamilton Duel

    Alexander Hamilton dies and Burr is seen as a murderer.
  • Burr arrested

    Wilkinson betrays Burr and turns him in for treason.
  • First Steam Boat Sale

    Robert Fulton Clermont sells first Steam Boat. Helps move goods.
  • Election of 1808

    James Madison becomes President
  • Non-Intercourse Act

    US cannot trade with Britain or France.
  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    William Henry Harrison puts Indians down in this battle.
  • War on Britain again

    Madison is pressured by Congress to declare war. Declares war on Britain.
  • Detroit Surrender

    US was not prepared for war, forced to surrender Detroit to England
  • Burning of the Whitehouse

    British raided Chesapeake Bay area and burn the White house. Dolly Harris saved many historical artifacts.
  • Fort McHenry

    Francis Scott Key writes the Star Spangled Banner as he watches the 25 hour bombardment on the Fort.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Britain wants peace with the US. War begins to end, however a few battles take place afterwords before word is out.
  • Second Bank of the US

    Almost bankrupt by 1819. Located in Philadelphia.
  • Tariff of 1816

    British goods flooded the market so the Tariff attempted to boost American production of goods.
  • Panic of 1819

    First major depression due to poor banking policies.
  • First Vision of Joseph Smith

    Joseph Smith supposedly had his first vision. Later establishes Mormonism
  • Election of 1824

    John Quincy Adams becomes president due to the Corrupt Bargain with Henry Clay.
  • Charles Finney

    Ordained for Ministry
  • Tariff of 1828

    Enraged the South, hurt farmers.
  • Election of 1828

    Andrew Jackson wins the Presidency.
  • Post Offices

    By 1830 there were 8000 Post offices in the US.
  • Force Bill of 1833

    Gave the President the power to enforce law using the army.
  • American Anti-Slavery Society

    William Lloyd Garrison fights for the end of slavery in the US.
  • Mechanical Reaper

    Cyrus hall McCormick patents the Mechanical Reaper.
  • Treaty of New Echota

    All Cherokee forced to abide by this and take on the Trail of Tears. Moved to Oklahoma.
  • Election of 1836

    Martin Van Buren takes the presidency because the Whig party was split among 4 candidates.
  • Panic of 1837

    Van Buren inherited the financial policies of Andrew Jackson's presidency. Most likely caused by the shutting down of the Second Bank of the US.
  • Election of 1840

    William Henry Harrison takes the presidency.
  • Brook Farm

    Most important transcendentalist communal experiment. Disbanded after a fire in 1846.
  • Texas Becomes a state

    Texas became the 28th state.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Contains 5 separate laws: Fugitive Slave Act, California is a free state, Resolves boundary dispute, abolishes slavery in DC,Organized the rest of the land from Mexico into New Mexico and Utah and allowed for slave decision of states to be done by popular sovereignty.
  • Election of 1852

    Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire wins the Presidency
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Nation is spinning toward disaster. Republican Party forms.
