Louisiana Purchase
On April 30th, 1803, The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the US--expanding westward--after Napoleon--a french commander--decided to give up his plans on establishing Louisiana. Since he needed the funds to fight the British, he gave up his interest in establishing an empire in North America. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
On May 14, 1804, The expedition--hosted by President Thomas Jefferson--traveled through the following:Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota. This was to initiate exploration of the new western territory and seek trade routes, and valuable information on their new land. -
War of 1812
From June 18th, 1812 to February 18th, 1812, the War of 1812 was a fought out war between the US and the United Kingdom when the British attempted to restrict U.S. trade after the conflict between the group during the French Revolution. Since the US couldn't choose a side (neutral), they faced repercussions from the British. -
Missouri Compromise
On March 2nd, 1820, a compromise amongst the states needed to negotiate the 50/50 split between slave states and free states. Missouri would be labeled a slave state while Maine would be a non-slave state. This was a bitter debate to avoid upsetting the balance between slave and free states in the nation. -
Monroe Doctrine
During December 2nd, 1823, the best known U.S. Policy in the Western Hemisphere obligated the European powers to respect the Western Hemisphere as the US' sphere of interest. This was articulated during President Jame Monroe's 7th annual message to congress; which the government was worried that European powers would encroach the US sphere of influence. -
Indian Removal Act
During May 28th, 1830, The American Indians moved further west after the demand for the Indian nation's land increased. Which would follow up to be known as the Trail of Tears. -
Oregon Trail & Territory
During the 1830s up to 1843, the establishing of the mountain men fur trade would be widely publicized after the discovery found during 1812 of a wagon-safe route over the continental divide at South Pass. The Manifest Destiny's influence made Americans eager to expand their horizons over the South pass. -
Mexican-American War
During April 25th, 1846, the Nueces strip between Us and Texas was a dispute boundary between what made up the United states and the partial mexican territory. Mexico did not recognize Texas as a legitimate American Territory which made conflict on the land; associated with Manifest Destiny. -
California Gold Rush
During January 24, 1848, the Gold Rush in California started when James W. Marshall discovered gold in Coloma, Cali that'd bring around 300,000 people to california from the rest of the US and abroad. -
The Compromise of 1850
During June 28th, 1850, the compromise admitted California to the Union as a free state, outlawed slave trade in Washington, and enacted the new fugitive act that made free states hunt runaway slaves without probably clause. This was proposed after the US showed recurring problems that threatened the split of the union between pro- and anti- slave believers. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
When the Kansas Nebraska Act became law on May 30th, 1854, the House of Representatives repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. The act passed after Stephen Douglas of Illinois introduced a bill that divided the land west of Missouri into two territories. -
Homestead Act
During May 20th, 1862, the Homestead Act accelerated the settlement of the western territory by granting adult heads of families 160 acres if surveyed, public land for a minimal filing fee and five years of continuous residence on that land. This was signed by Lincoln after Daniel made the first claim under the act in 1863 to help develop the west and spur economic growth.
