In the Election of 1824, Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams were both running for president. Jackson had won the popularity vote but lost the electoral vote. So the House of Representatives had to make a decision and they chose Adams. Jackson's supporters said that Adams had made corrupt bargain with Henry Clay and when he chose Clay to be secretary of state the accusations grew and weakened Adams.
