The signing of the delcleration marked independance day for all of America. This was important in politics and society because it forever changed the way Americans lived but also created many new problems in the government. -

The Battle at Ticonderoga was a turning point in the war for the Americans. British General John Burgoyne surrendered to the Americans late in 1777. This gave the government hope that they would potentially win the war. -
Election/Revolution of 1800
In 1800 Adams and Jefferson both run for president. Jefferson wins and switches the government power from federalists to democratic-republic. This election was imporant in politics because there was a smooth transition from one political party to another. -
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
Under Jefferson's presidency, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark travel across the new US land searching for a Northwest Passage. Although never finding the passage, the expedition was very successful; educating the Americans on the native people and the new land. -
Missouri Compromise
When Missouri applies for statehood, slavery becomes an issue in congress. Henry Clay proposes that Missouri becomes a slave state, Maine becomes a free state. Additionally, a line was created and all new states above that line would be free and all states below that line would be slave states. -
Publication of Fredrick Douglass' Autobiography
Fredrick Douglass, a fugitive slave and hero of civil rights, exposes many of the secrets of slavery in the south through an autobiography. This opens the eyes of northerns and enrages southerners. -
Start of the Civil War
The secesion of the southern states from the US is the most common marking point of the beginning of the Civil War. The southern states, now the Confederate states, were fightning to keep slavery while the northern states were fighting against slavery and the beliefs of slave owners. -
The Thirteenth Amendment
The thirteenth amdendment was a huge leap for slavery. Although African Americans were not fully equal in society it was a starting point for civil rights. -
Purchase of the Louisiana Territory
Napoleon sold a large portion of the land west of the Appalachans, from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains, to the US for $15 million.
