The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was the document that announced separation of the 13 colonies from British rule. This resulted in the establishment of the United States as a country. -
Adoption of the American flag
The flag was necessary after the Deceleration of Independence. General George Washington first raised the Continental Army flag in 1776, which had a red-and-white striped flag with the British Union Jack where the stars are now. -
U.S. Constitution
The Constitutional Convention was held in 1787 to revise the Articles of Confederation, but instead a new government was created. The Constitution was approved on September 17, 1787 and ratified on July 2, 1788. -
George Washington's Inauguration
Washington was inaugurated as president of the United States in 1789. He became the first president of the new country, the U.S.A. -
Naturalization Act of 1790
The Naturalization Act of 1790 was a law that set the first rules for granting United States citizenship by naturalization. The law limited to a "Free white person... of good character,". -
Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791. This guaranteed individual freedoms. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the territory of Louisiana by the United States from the French. The land bought is modern day Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and parts of Minnesota, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. This purchase doubled the size of the country. -
War of 1812
The war of 1812 was a conflict between the United States and Great Britain. Causes for this war was primarily by the British support for Natives resisting westward expansion in the US, restrictions on American trade with Europe, and British practices of impressing American sailors into the Royal Navy. -
Mexican-American War
This war resulted in the annexation of vast new territories including California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln was elected president of 1860, with Hannibal Hamlin as his vice president. Issues dealing with slavery were finally brought up during his time as president.
