Treaty of Amity and Commerce
The Treaty of Amity and Commerce promoted trade and commercial ties between the U.S. and France. It allowed the presence of consuls and recognized the United States as an independent nation. This treaty was based on the Model Treaty prepared by John Adams in 1776 which protected trade and shipping rights in the event of war but did not call for mutual defense. This was in preparation for war with the British. -
