    A group of Christians known as the Puritans opposed the policies of the Church of England. They were eventually allowed to settle in the new western English colonies as a compromise by the English government in order to appease the Puritan's and their families while also getting rid of Puritan influence in England.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Sir William Berkeley, the Royal Governor of Virginia, earned most of the money made by tobacco production despite the work provided by farmers and landowners. In 1675, one of the largest landowners in the colony, Nathaniel Bacon, organized a militia to attack Doeg Native Americans after having their corn stolen. Berkeley wanted peace between all in the New World and refused to assist Bacon. Eventually, Bacon became governor, and after being denied assistance again, burned down Jamestown.

    England reestablishes the colonies with a different government after observing "overreach" by the Puritans in the colonies. The new government leads to further resentment of England by the colonies.

    A group of Protestants led by the Duke of Monmouth in the colonies formed a militia in protest of the new Catholic king of England. After a series of skirmishes, the rebellion is cut down and the leader is beheaded for treason.
  • Glorious Revolution

    A bloodless coup occurred in England causing the current leaders to change. This shifted the balance of power in the colonies and removed power from the English officials in America. Puritans were able to practice religion the way the wanted more freely.
