1600-1700 timeline

  • Jamestown

    The first permanent english settlement in North America. Was along the Chesapeake region in Virginia. The Virginia Company funded the colonization expedition. Jamestown held many important historical events and still continues to be known as a major landmark of the U.S.
  • Plymouth colony

    What the first English colony. The colony was settled by the pilgrims and was surprised to be living around "strangers". The pilgrims rode over the seas on the mayflower, and the colony thrived until it reached its Starving Time.
  • Mayflower compact

    This document created laws for the pilgrims that came off the Mayflower. This stated that the colonist would remain loyal to King James despite the need for self-governance. The rules being created for " the good of the colony", but ultimately created to keep the tie and need for England.
  • Virginia company

    The Virginia company declared bankruptcy due to Disease, mismanagement, Indian attacks, and factionalism that caused money to spill out. The bankruptcy however led to Virginia becoming a royal colony.
  • Pequot War

    (1636-1638) The Pequot War was a conflict between the Native American Pequot tribe and the English settlements in New England between. The cause of the war was the murder of two English traders named John Stone and John Oldham.
  • Rhode Island

    Was charted in 1644 as a royal colony. However, it was the first english colony to offer complete freedom of religion to its settlers. Due to the freedom of religion it was called the

    "Sewer colony". later on the colony prospered through the Atlantic Slave trade.
  • Maryland Toleration Act

    The act, also known as the Act Concerning Religion, was the first law in North America requiring religious tolerance for Christians. It was the first instance of the separation of church and state found in colonial America.
  • New France

    Louis XIV made New France a royal colony in 1663. The primary focus of this was fur trade. However, settlement in New France was restricted to French Catholics, so French missionaries sought to convert the regions indigenous population. Jesuits( Society of Jesus) played a large role.
  • King Philips war

    It was the Native Americans' last-ditch effort to avoid recognizing English authority and stop English settlement on their native lands. The war is named after the Wampanoag chief Metacom, later known as Philip or King Philip, who led the fourteen-month bloody rebellion.
  • Bacon Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion was a conflict between landless former indentured servants, small farmers, and some enslaved people under Bacon and Virginia's political/ economic elite under the rule of Berkley.
  • The Pueblo Revolt

    The Pueblo revolt was an uprising of indigenous Pueblo people against the Spanish colonizers in Santa Fe. During the revolt 400 spaniards were killed and it drove the remaining 2,000 Spanish settlers south towards Mexico.
  • Pennsylvania and Delaware

    These two colonies were quaker colonies that had a freedom of conscience and good relations with native Americans. Delaware was established in 1862.
  • The Glorious Revolution

    After James II angered parliament, his Protestant daughter,Mary Stuart, and her husband William III were ruling as joint monarchs. The new ruling allowed protections for the new english subjects.

    This war was an armed conflict between England and France in North America in the 17th century. The war was a battle over control of North America, particularly over the fur trade in North America. This was a conflict that led to the instability between France and England that started the French and Indian War.
