Start of Slavery
About 20 Africans were enslaved during the 1619 and were sold for labor. It went on to being Hundreds of thousands being enslaved in throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. -
Cotton Gin
A young Yankee school teacher named Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin to helped slaves remove seed from cotton. It made it faster and made it a more efficient way to get tobacco and cotton. It was spread widely around the south and it helped slavery from happening in some places. -
Slave Rebellion
A revolt that was led by Nat Turner was made in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. There was around 75 black men who had murdered 55 white people within two days. This was before the armed resistance and the arrival of state militia forces. -
13th Amendment
Though the 13th Amendment was made, it did not give African Americans the right to vote. It gave them freedom of slavery for good. After it was made, there were black soldiers who had joined the army and had lost their lives. -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was created to grant citizenship to all people born in the United States which included African Americans and enslaved people. It gave them equal protection of the laws but it did not give them the equal right to vote as white male Americans were able to do. -
Passed by Congress
Congress passed the proposal of the 15th Amendment for it to be signed as an amendment. -
Ratified
The 15th Amendment was ratified and enforced. -
End of Slavery
President Lincoln made a preliminary emancipation proclamation to set free of slaves. He made it so there would be no slavery and every African American would be free. Thought it did not officially end all slavery. -
Jim Crow Laws
In the South, Jim Crow laws were made for segregation of African American and white people. There was different places for white people and African American people could use such as drinking fountains and bus seats. -
Realized
The time when African American voters would be realized and acted upon by all by this time. Almost a century after the 15th Amendment was ratified.
