Slaves arrive to the Americas
Slaves arrived in Jamestown, Virginia where the main settlement was at the time. The slaves were brought here from Africa and they were much needed in the Americas because of the work needed to be done on plantations. Plantations were hundred of arches that needed tons of work. Over 4 million slaves were brought over before the 13th Amendment. -
First protest of slavery in the colonies
The first public protest by Quakers against slavery took place in 1688 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. They stated that just because they are black does not make them any bettter then whites. That if we can control blacks we can control other whites! -
Senate pass 13th Amendment
Senate pass the 13th Amendment 38 to 6 vote! -
Northwest Ordinance
A government for the Northwest Territory, provided a way for admitting new states to the Union from the territory, and listed a bill of rights guaranteed in the territory. Also proibited slavery Northwest of the Ohio River. -
Nat Turners Rebellion
This rebellion was led by Nat Turner and it led to the most deaths of white people by a slave rebellion with the count of 55-65 deaths. This rebellion lasted a few days and once it was over it lead to a widespread fear and white militias organized in retaliation against slaves. -
Lincoln becomes president
November of 1860 President Lincoln is elected. He is very against slavery, and easily won the votes of the North. He was part of the Republican Party! Went into officce 1861 and just three short years later he was assinated. -
Civil War
Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865 in the United States. It was fought between Confedeacy and the Union. The union didnt want slavery but the Condedeacy did. so the Condefeacy became seceded. From there on out the war had begun. -
Battle of Prairie Grove
The Battle of Prairie Grove was a battle of the American Civil War fought on 7 December 1862, that resulted in a tactical stalemate but essentially secured northwest Arkansas for the Union -
Emancipation Proclamation
It was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Abraham Lincoln announced emancipation of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. That was announced in Sept. 1864! -
House passes the 13th Amendment
The House passes the 13th Amendment 119 to 56 vote! -
13th Amendment ratified
This amendment was passed on January 31, 1865 and was later ratified on December 6, 1865, officially the ending of slavery. This happen about 8 months after the Civil War! -
Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow was the name of a system which took place mainly in southern and border states, between 1877 and the mid-1960s. Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life. Under Jim Crow, African Americans were relegated to the backk of the bus or had to use different bathrooms! They were stiill looked down on, more like 2nd class citizen instead of equal rights! -
Mississippi Raitifies the 13th Amendment
It took Mississippi 148 years before they offically ratified the 13th amendment. It was the only state to not ratify it 148 years ago. In 1995 they tried ratify it but it failed. After seeing the movie Lincoln the govern of Mississippi did some research, and it was finally ratified on Feb 18th, 2013!
