First Slaves
The first African slaves, twenty specifically, who came to America was in 1619. They were brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia by the Dutch to help with the production of tobacco. -
Northwest Ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance protected civil liberties and outlawed slavery in the new territories. The Ohio River was the line between free and slave states. -
The Liberator
This was an American Abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp. 3/4 of the subscribers were African American. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
This revolt was one of the most famous slave results in American History. The revolt included 70 slaves that ended up killing 50 whites. It took a whole army to stop the rebellion, causing Turner and 55 other slaves to get executed. -
Civil War Starts
Eleven of the Southern states that joined the Confederacy started fighting the Union. This war lasted four years until the South surrendered abolishing slavery, and freeing 4 million slaves. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The emancipation proclamation was an executive order by President Abraham Lincoln that did not abolish slavery. It encouraged slaves to escape their masters to run to the Union and join the Union army. -
Senate Passes Amendment
The Senate passes the 13th amendment with a vote of 38 to 6. Seven votes above the 2/3 majority. -
The Black Codes
The Black Codes were laws passed by Democrat-controlling Southern states in 1865-1866, after the Civil War. This allowed people to still use blacks as slaves. -
House Passes Amendment
The House of Representatives passes the 13th amendment with a vote of 119 to 56. -
13th Amendment Ratified
After the House passed the amendment it went to the states. Georgia was the last state to ratify the amendment. This amendment was ratified in 309 days.
