Slaves Arrive
The First captive slave arrived in Jamestown in April of 1619. The slaves were held hostage by the Americans and sailed to Jamestown with around 20 African Americans on board. This marked the official beginning of slavery in the United States. -
Civil War
The Civil War was fought between the North and the South of the United States. They fought over the issue of slavery the South was in favor of slavery and the North was Anti-Slavery. This marked the start of the push to free slaves. -

James Ashley proposed the idea to ban slavery. Later that same month James Wilson, from Iowa, proposed an idea to make an amendment and abolish slavery for good. -
13th Amendment to the senate
Judiciary Community passed the 13th Amendment. Representatives took their first votes on the Amendment. -
Amendment Passed by Senate
Senators waste little time following the Judiciary Committee's recommendation and the Amendment overwhelmingly won in votes 38-6. -
Amendment Passed by the House
The amendment had been passed by the house with a 119-56 vote. -

The Confederates surrendered in the war, this made the 13th amendment so much closer to being passed and added -
Black Codes
The Black Codes were introduced right after the Civil war by the southern states. The Codes would limit the black's freedom and create a loophole to bring cheap labor. A couple of these codes would make blacks have to be employed or would have charged if they weren't paid they would be forced to work for free. Public places were separated by race. So black people were "free", but had many restrictions. -
Amendment was added
Nearly 12 months after the amendment was passed through congress, Georgia became the 27th state to ratify and agree to get the 3/4 votes required.
