Ike Turner Born
Turner was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on November 5, 1931, to Beatrice Cushenberry (1909–1991), a seamstress, and Izear Luster Turner, a Baptist minister. Ike was the younger of two siblings, he had an elder sister, named Ethel May. -
Anna Mae Bullock (Tina Turner) Born
Born on the morning of 26th Nov 1939 at Brownsville's Haywood Memorial Hospital to Floyd Richard Bullock and Zelma Bullock (nee Currie) after which she was brought home - a four-room shotgun style house in the Poindexter farm where Richard as he was known worked as an overseer. -
Richard and Zelma leave Nutbush
Sometime after the spring of 1942 Richard and Zelam Bullock move to Oak Ridge, Knoxville, Tennessee for work. Richard worked as a labourer on the top-secret Atom 12 project and Zelma as an waitress and dormitory domestic at the airbase (They remained there until 1943). Tina is around 3 years old and left with her grandmother Mama Roxanna and her husband Papa Alex, her sister Ruby Alline is left with Mama Georgie. Photograph attached is a view of Oakridge. -
The daughters move to Oakridge
Around the summer of 1944 Anna Mae and Alline are sent to Oakridge at the request of their parents. Whilst the parents are at work the girls are left in the care of a Mrs Blake, a friend of a black woman with whom the Bullocks boarded in Knoxsville. -
Richard and Zelma Breakup for Final Time
Richard and Zelma's relationship problems become worse. Zelma leaves Richard and moves to St Louis to live an Aunt. Shortly after Richard re-marries a Ripley dvorcee called Essie Mae would has a daughter Nettie Mae. Nicknamed Frog and Pig as they each looked similar. Tina is aged 10 during this time. -
Richard and Essie Mae Breakup
Richard and Frog (Essie Mae) move back to Ripley, it was here their relationship would become stormy with at least two occasions Richard being stabbed by his wife. The marriage continued for around a year until Frog and Pig left. -
Rocket 88
Considered to be one of the fathers of rock and roll, Ike's first recording, " Rocket 88" by "Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats," in 1951, is considered by some to be the "first rock and roll song" ever. It was recorded on either the 3rd or the 5th of March at Sam Phillips' recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Ike Turner's piano intro to the song was later used nearly note-for-note by Little Richard in "Good Golly Miss Molly".It was the second-biggest r & b single of 1951. -
Richard leaves his daughters
Richard stops attending church and now with no wife has a Miss Jonelle practically raise the two girls, Alline and Anna Mae. The relationship between Richard and Miss Jo eventually becomes violent. Anna Mae, now thirteen faces another set back when her father leaves. -
Anna Mae starts work
Anna Mae starts working (after school) for the Henderson’s, a white family in Ripley. She does general housekeeping and helps take care of Connie and Guy Henderson’s son David. Eventually Anna Mae would end up staying with the family over the weekends. -
Papa Alex dies
Papa Alex, Mama Roxanna’s husband has died, and she is now living with Anna Mae’s Uncle Gill.
