    Queen Elizabeth allowed Walter Raleigh to send over 100 men to Roanoke Island after two of his explorers found it to be a perfect place for settlement. They arrived too late to harvest crops and their supplies were dwindling, they went back home a year later. After they left, fifteen men with supplies showed up and stayed in the fort.

    Virginia's James River
    May 14,1607 a group of over 100 men landed on the banks of Virginia's James River . The river was not healthy to drink . Their leader was John Smith , he ordered them to build a fort for protection.

    Captain Smith returned to England on May 23, 1609. Then the relations between the settler and the Powhatton nation weakened. Four years later, John Smith had died.

    The first elected assembly was established, called the House of Burgess. The black workers, called indentured servants arrived by boat and worked a plot of land and later owned it.

    The Mayflower set sails for Jamestown, VA
    On November 9, 1620 Oceanus' parents had to find ways to protect themselves during bad weather while on the Mayflower. They had to live on salted beef, dried biscuits called "hard tack" and other dried vegetables. It took over two months to sail from England to the New World. There were ober a hundred people and only one death occured. There was also a baby born on the journey and it was named Oceanus Hopkins.

    The Mayflower hoped to settle close to Jamestown, Va since they had an established settlement for 13 years. A storm hit and caused the Mayflower to go off course. They landed in Cape Cod, which is much further North. They ended up traveling across Massachusetts Bay to a rocky harbor called Plymouth. The decided to stay and establish their own colony.

    Half of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower died from the harsh weather, starvation and disease. A Native American named Samoset showed up and spoke English. He later brought Squanto and they became the Pilgrims' first Native American friends.

    Growing Crops with Squanto
    Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to hunt local animals, gather shellfish, extract sap from maple trees, and grow crops like beans, corn, and squash. Even with the rocky soil Squanto showed them how to keep their crops alive by fertilizing with dead fish. He also taught them which plants were poisonus and helped them form an alliance with local Wampanoags.

    With an abundance of food and no longer starving, they celebrated their first Thanksgiving . Thanksgiving was a term used for prayer and fasting (not eating). Governer William Bradford held a celebration feast.

    King Charles II decided on March 4, 1681 to give William Penn land in the New World that was Southwest of New Jersey. King Charles owed Williams' deceased father a loan. King Charles thought he would call it Sylvania, which means "woods", but later called it Pennsylvania.
