The first colonists arrive in Maryland. Mostly indentured servants. Near the mouth of the Potomac River, the colonists built Maryland's first settlement, now called St. Mary's City. -

Toleration Act Passes
In 1649, Maryland gave freedom of religion to all the Christians, unlike Virginia. -
Carolina
in 1663, England's new king, King Charles II, gave land for a colony south of Virginia, called Carolina. -
Carolina Constitution
The 8 Lords Proprietors adopted a constitution for the colony, which allowed free white males to choose leaders and make some laws. -
The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania
William Penn wrote this to give people freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to trial by jury. -
North and South
The Lords Proprietors split Carolina into 2 colonies; North Carolina and South Carolina. -
The Great Awakening
A religious movement that renewed many people's interest in religion. It quickly spread throughout the English colonies. -
The Georgia Colony
Another English king decided to start a colony south of South Carolina. James Oglethorpe had an idea for Georgia. -
The Savannah Colony
Settlers arrived and founded the Savannah colony.
