    Slaves arrive in America
    On August 20 1619 The first African slaves arrived in current-day Hampton Virginia. Seven days later more ships arrived with more enslaved Africans.
  • First protest of slavery

    In 1688 in Germantown Pennsylvania the first protest against slavery. The protest was centered around a petition made by a religious group saying that the bible said slavery was bad.
  • Northern States abolish slavery

    In 1804 all northern states have abolished slavery. This long process started in1784 when Connecticut passed laws outlawing it.
  • Nat Turners rebellion

    Nat Turners rebellion
    In August of 1831, Nat turner and other enslaved men led a revolt against some of their owners. The group killed about 55 white people then hide out nearby and was eventually found and hung in Jerusalem, Virginia.
  • The republican part was founded

    The republican part was founded
    On March 20, 1854, four members of the Whig party held a meeting in Ripon Wisconsin to create a new part that was opposed to slavery spreading west. With the successful Kansas-Nebraska bill of 1854, the Whig party transformed into the republican party.

    in the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the president. Lincoln was the first republican president to be elected.

    At 4:30 AM Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina near Charleston Harbor. About 34 hours later Union troops surrendered.

    On January 31 1865 Congress decided to pass the 13 Amendment. In April 1864 the senate passed the 13th amendment but the house did not

    In 1865 Robert. E. Lee surrendered the Confederate army to General Ulysses at Appomattox Courthouse in Appomattox county Virginia. The last battle of the civil war was fought at Palmito Ranch in Texas on May 13th, 1865
  • 13th amendment is ratified

    13th amendment  is ratified
    On December 6th, 1865 27 of 36 ratified the 13th amendment making it an amendment and putting an end to slavery.
  • Mississippi

    Mississippi
    After 148 years Mississippi ratified the 13th amendment. Mississippi voted to ratify it in 1995 but it failed because they forgot to notify U.S. Archivist to make it official.
