Victory in Europe
After the death of Hitler and Mussolini, Axis forces began to surrender throughout Europe. On May 8th 1945, the Allied powers offically accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. The act of military surrender was signed on 7 May in Reims, France, and ratified on 8 May in Berlin, Germany. -
Hiroshima Bombing
The Japanese fought on even after the war in Europe ended. Truman decided to use the newly developed atomic bomb to end the war quickly and prevent more U.S. casualties. The Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, killing about 70,000 people and 70,000 more later from radiation.
