Pearl Harbor Attacked
On Sunday December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor, one of the United States largest naval bases and fleets were suddenly atacked by Japanese forces. A total of about 2,300 Americans died that day and 21 ships were either destroyed or damaged. This event marked the entrance of the United States into World War II -
D-Day Normandy
One of the largest amphibious assults in the history of the world commenced by Allied forces. The objective was to secure a beachhead for futher assult on Nazi forces in Europe. Over 160,000 troops were deployed into 5 different sectors of the large beach. They were Juno, Sword, Omaha, Juno, and Utah. The previous night Allied Paratroopers landed behind enemy lines in order to help aid the assult on the Axis powers. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The purpose of this battle was to capture 2 Japanese airfields and cut off commercial merchant ships from supplying the Japanese home island. This also the location of where the famous picture was taken that motivated Americans to buy war bonds to help support the war efforts. -
The First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan
The war in Europe was over Axis Powers had no choice but to surrender. However, Japan kept on fighting the Americans in the Pacific front even after being asked to surrender. After Japan denied the ultimatum to surrender to Allied forces, the Americans had little choice but to drop"Little Boy" an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. The result killed about 100,000-160,000 people. Even after this disaster, the Japanese goverment didn't surrender until a second bomb was dropped.
