Nazi Invasion of Poland
Germany, the Soviet Union and Solvakia invaded Poland a week after the Non Agression Pact. This invasion marked the beginning of World War II. Germany attacked Poland from the north, south and west. Aldolf Hitler wanted to gain land that was lost during WWI. It lasted 36 days and by the end the country of poland was divided in two between Germany and Soviet Russia. -
France Surrenders to Germany
After Germany invaded France and other "low countries" in early May, France surrendered by siginging an armistice, This happened three weeks after the invasion first began. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
The Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the the US naval base in Hawaii with 353 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes off 6 aircraft carriers. Japan damaged and sunk a few ship while 188 aircarfts were destroyed, 2,402 men were killed and 1,282 wounded. The attack also caused the United States to declare war on the Japanese Empire and enter World War II. -
Battle of Midway
Eventhough Japan had a much better chance of winning the United States defeated Japan in this very important naval battle. Much of the Japanese fleet was damaged and destroyed. Japan aimed to become powerful in the East by defeating what was left of the US but they failed. -
The Battle of Stalingrad
This battle was between Germany, Romania, Italy, Hungary, Croatia against the Soviet and lasted from August 23, 1942 to February 2, 1943. The Soviet was victorious. This battle was a major battle of WWII and was known as the major turning point of the war. It the bloddiest and about 750,000 were killed or went missing. Hitler wanted to overcome the entire East but he was defeated. -
D-Day
This invasion was between the allied forces and Germany and had two parts. The first part was airborne a little after midnight and the second was a coastal attack on Omaha Beach in Normandy around 6:30am. It was the biggest "amphibious invasion" in the world. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
This battle was between the United States and the Empire of Japan and it lasted from February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945. The US captured the Japanese island of Iwo Jima and were victorious. This battle is rembered by one of the most fmous photos of WWII called "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima". It was taken on February 23, 1945. It is a picture of five United States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the United States on top of Mount Suribachi during the Battle. -
FDR Dies
Franklin D, Roosevelt was the 23rd preident of the United States. He was president during the time of WWII and worked with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin to lead the Allies against Japan and Germany. He was a big financial help to the war. Just as it was coming to an end and victory was near President FDR dies from cerebral hemorrhage. Vice President Henry S. Truman takes over presidency. -
Adolf Hitler Dies
It is unsure what really happened during Adolf Hitler's death. It is said that he committed suicide with his wife of two days Eva Braun. They both took poisonous cyanide tablets and Adolf took a gunshot to the head. They were both creamated afterwords. Hitler committed suicide to prevent from being captured and humiliated by the soviet troops. -
The First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan
President Harry S. Truman ordered the bombing to of "Little Boy" to take place on Hiroshima. 90,000–166,000 died within the first few months after the bombing and half of those died on the day of the bombing. Deaths were caused by the explosion itself, burns, radition, poisoning, and other injuries accompanies with illnesses. The only nuclear bombing in a war took place during World War II in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. These bombings ended the war.
