Italy invades Egypt, begining of North African Campaign
Everyone wanted control of Egypt and North Africa. There was the Suez Canal, which meant control of the Middle East. Also, there were natural resources, like oil, especially in Egypt. This marked the begining of the North African Campaign, or Desert War, in order to control North Africa. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
It was early in the morning when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in two waves. There were about two thousand deaths on that day in Oahu. The next day, President Roosevelt adressed Congress that it was a day to remember, which in turn, Congress declared war on Japan; the US entrance to World War II. Because of the alliance with Japan, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States the following days. -
US troops arrive in Britain
After the US entrance in to World War II, US troops begin arriving in Britain. Preparations for a second front in North West Europe was in place. -
Japan Conquers the Philippines
On this date, Britain humiliating gave up Singapore to Japan. Japan set it up as the Southern Army headquarters. In a couple of months, many of the Allies headquarters in the Philippines would surrender. Leaving the islands to Japan. -
Battle of the Coral Sea
The battle was fought in the seas southwest of the Solomon Islands. It was the first Pacific War battle. Japan fought these battles in order to capture a Port Moresby and Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. The battle was between Japan and United States and Australia's navy. -
Allies invade Sicily
The point of this was to get the dictator, Benito Mussolini from the Italian power. Bombing and naval gunfire for six weeks, finally achieved the fact that Mediterranean's seas were opened. Leaving the Allies one step further into winning. -
D-Day
The Allies, America, Canada, and Briatin arrived at Normandy, France. There were two assualts, one airborne and the actual landing on the beach. Many soldiers died before even reaching shore. This day was important because eastern Europe was finally starting to fall into the right hands. -
Battle of the Bulge
Hitler saw into this battle as his last stand, he thought that he would surprise Britain, US, and Russia on the Western front. At first, the Germans had the advantage and surprise, after a few weeks, the surpise was gone and the Allies were on top of it again. The soldiers fought in hard weather, wearing white clothing in order to blend in with the snow. It was the longest battle in World War II. -
First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan
The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the second being on Nagasoki. The reason for the bombings was the fact that Japan did not want to surrender. It was decided to drop the bomb on Hiroshima because the city was highly industrial, had a military base, and there had been no bombs dropped there yet. The bomb was dropped at 8:15 in the morning, leaving many dead.
