JFK is sworn in to office
JFK was the democratic candidate for presidency against Richard Nixon the former vice president. them two did the first nationalized tv debate and kennedy won giving him the victory in the closest presidential race of the twentieth. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
During the Eisenhower administration they started a plan to try and overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba. The plan was accepted though until JFK came into presidency. The military trained 1500 cubans to invade Fidel. The mission failed and we had to pay cuba 53 million dollars worth of food to get back the remaining surviving cuban soldiers. -
Space Program
On this date he did a speech first annoucing his plan to put a man on the moon. This was big because the USA feared that the Soviet Union was beating us in the space race. Yet even though he did so much to try and get people to the moon it didn't happen until 6 years after his death. -
Civil Rights Movement
During the early stages of his presidency JFK was to preoccupied was other stuff (cuba,bay of pigs) and didn't want to get involved with the civil rights movement. He did though assigned federal marshals to protect the freedom riders. He eventually signed executive order 11063 to prohibit racial segregation in federal facilities -
Cuban Missile Crisis
US spy planes caught pictures of Russian Missile plants in cuba. Kennedy was in a dilema because he didn't know if these missile were for offensive or defensive purposes. it was made up that it was for offensive reasons and so JFK said that from now on they would do a naval quarintine of Soviet ships. Eventually they decided to tear down the sites. -
West Berlin Speech
With fueding sides of government going in Germany, JFK went to West Berlin to do a public speech to promote their commitment to them and to critisize communism, it is known for its famous quote "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" which means "i am a citizen of Berlin" which really gave him a good responsse. -
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
In a meeting at Vienna, France in 1961 Kennedy and soviet repersentative Nikita Khrushchev both said that they were against nuclear testing. Yet shortly after Russia Did testing and 5 days later so did the US. So Kennedy had a meeting set up and the US, United Kingdon, and Soviets signed a treaty against it. -
JFK Assasination
While in Dallas, Texas on a democratic political trip jfk was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald and while in a parade in the presidential limosune. Oswald was then shot and killed before he could be tried.
