Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Ferdinand and his wife were shot in Sarajevo. The assasin was Gavrilo Princip, whose motive for the murder was to hopefully end Austria-Hungary South Slav provinces so that they could be combined into Yugoslovia or Greater Serbia. -
Serbian Campaign
Austria-Hungarian troops invaded Serbia. This was fought from 1914-1915 when the Macedonian Front was formed. This front would range from Danube to Southern Macedonia and back north again, involving help from almost all combatants from the war. -
Germany Declares War on France
After thinking the French would be weak and easy to capture, Germany decided to advance towards them instead of Russia first. However this didn't work out well when Russian started to mobilise its army and France didn't. The panicked Germans then decided to take France. -

Russian 1st and 2nd armies enter Prussia, following through with its promise to ally France that they would attack from the east to divert resources and relieve pressure on France during the opening weeks of the first world war. -

A short lived Russian attempt to defend the great fortress of Lemberg against advancing German and Austrian troops during the after math of the great German victory of Gorlice-Tarnow. -
Battle of Marne
Effectively ended the monthlong German offense that opened the war and reached Paris. It resulted in an ally victory against the German army. -
Russia loses First Battle of Masurian Lakes
This battle marked the second win for the Germans over the Russians after the first occurred at Tannenburg in August. It was also a German offense in the early stages of World War 1. It pushed the whole Russian army back across its entire front which,eventually, ejected it from Germany all together. -
First German air raid on Britian
The german used the invention of the Kaiser to their advantage on this day by carrying out the first zeppelin raid on Britian killing two and injuring 16 people. -
Third Battle of Ypres
The rhird battle of Ypres was the bloodiest battle fought in order to keep German enemys out of Ypres. It is estimated that the "Third Ypres" costed the allies about 300,000 casualities and the Germans a further 260,000 casualties. -
November 11, 1918
Allied powers signed a cease fire agreement with Germany at Rethonades, France which brought World War 1 to an end
