    Charles I invaded the House of Commons and tried to arrest the leaders of parliament, however the leaders were warned and escaped. This act by Charles I was against the law and open rebellion.

    Charles I was acused of treason (trying to overthrow the king) which was stupid because that meant he was trying to overthrow himself. Later it was decided that he would be executed.

    Cromwell went to Ireland to stop the irish civil war. He started with the massacre of Drogheda and went on for nine months. In total, he killed 616,000 people (directly and indirectly).

    Parliament wins the war
    Parliament decided they didn't want Charles II (Charles I's son) as king and Oliver Cromwell made himself leader, however, Cromwell didn't want to be called king so he was called lord protector instead.

    after Oliver Cromwell died, General Monk recalled parliament, however, they thought they could still control the military so Monk dissolved them and made a new parliament.

    The new parliament decided to make Charles II king (a very popular decision) . Charles II agreed that parliament made all decisions, but he had a plan to regain the power his dad lost (but it didn't work).

  • Glorious revolution

    Glorious revolution
    After king Charles II died, his successor, James II made it clear that he intended to overthrow parliament. Rebellions soon broke out and James II fled England. Parliament then asked his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to be king and queen. For the first time, the monarch was chosen by parliament, a huge step for England.
