Enlisted into the Army
He joined the Army under the name Edgar A. Perry so as to support himself. The image is of Fort Independence, where Poe was stationed while in the military. -
Discharged from the military
Poe had reached the rank of Sergeant Major for Artillery, and was discharged because he revealed his real name and purpose for joining. This was only two years after he had joined. -
First story was published
His first story Metzengerstein was published in the Philadelphia Saturday Courier. -
Married
He married his cousin Virginia Clemm when he was 27 and she 13. They lied about her age and said that she was 21 so that they could get married. -
Tell-Tale Heart
The Tell-Tale Heart was published in "The Pioneer." It is not told which day in January that the tale was published. -

One of his most famous poems The Raven was published. Poe sold the poem to The American Review for nine dollars. -

Annabel Lee
"It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea. That a maiden there live whom you many know by the name of Annabel Lee." Poe's inspiration for this poem was his wife and her death. The poem was sold before he died, but wasn't published till after his death.
