The "Great War" began when a Yugoslav Nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Due to Alliances throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, war exploded. -

One of the first major battles of World War I. This Battle was fought for the occupation of the strategic town of Ypres in Western Belgium. The victory had gone to the allies, although casualties were heavy on both sides. -
Christmas Truce on the Western Front
On the Christmas Day, instead of hiding in trenches while shooting at each other, both sides called for temporary peace. During this time, the men of both sides spent time together singing Christmas Carrols, playing soccer, and celebrating the same holiday, Christmas. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
The famous Lusitania, while traveling from Britain to America, was attacked and sunk by a German U-boat. When America came to find that 128 U.S. civilians were killed in the event, they became further hastened to join the war. -
Battle Of Verdun
The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of WWI and had the most casualties in the war. The attack on Verdun was a German Plan to quickly weaken the French, however, the result was a French tactical Victory. -
Battle of The Somme
On just the first day of this battle, 58,000 British soldiers were killed or injured. This battle also had the first utilzation of tanks (by the British) The victory was undecided, but the tactical effects were favourable to the allies. -
United States declares war on Germany
As Germany continued to sink American ships, America became more and more hasty to join the war. President Wilson tried to avert such action from happening, however, after receiving intelligence from Britain about the Zimmerman telegram, the U.S decided that the time for war had come. -
The Battle of Cambrai
This battle was the first to involve the large-scale use of Tanks, which proved to be quite effective. The result was an operational stalemate; both sides achieved great offensive tactical success. -
Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany abdicates
As the war continued, Germany continually seeked an armistice and the citizens threatened revolution. As a result, instead of pushing for war, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates. 2 days later, an Armistice is declared. -
Treaty of Versailles
After the declared armistice and the Paris Peace conference, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, officially ending the war between Germany and the Allies. However, Germany was left in heavy debt that would not know an end until the year 2010.
