Austria-Hungary Declares War
A month after the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary decides to declare war on Serbia. -
Battle of Frontiers
The Battle of Frontiers were series of battles along the eastern frontier of France and also in the southern part of Belgium. The battles started shortly after WWI began and was fought mainly by France against Germany. Around 140,000 lives of soldiers were lost during the war. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
A U-boat sinks the Lusitania and 1,198 people were killed. This event angered the United States but did not cause it to enter the war. -
Rasputin is Killed
Even though he was a peasant, Rasputin had a high position. The aristocracy could not stand the idea of Rasputin being in such a high position and the peasants did not like rumors of the Tsarina sleeping with such a man. All of this, and seeing Rasputin as a threat to Russia, led to his murder. -
Zimmerman Telegram
The telegram sent by Zimmerman to Mexico was discovered & translated by the British. The telegram urged Mexico to join the war against the United States. Also, the telegram said that Mexico would regain territory (such as Texas) from the United States. -
United States Declares War
President at the time, Woodrow Wilson, asks Congress for a declaration of war with Imperial Germany after they received the Zimmerman Telegram (intercepted by the British) -
Selective Service Act
The United States passed this act, giving power to the Federal Government to draft men to create an army for the war. The act was later canceled after the war ended in 1918. -
Sending Troops Into Russia
President Woodrow Wilson cooperates with the Allies and sends troops into Russia. -
End of War
At 11 o'clock of this day, Germany and the Allies sign an Armistice, ending the war. This armistice was signed in a carriage in Compiègne Forest. -
Treaty of Versailles
German delegates and Allies signed a Peace Treaty in Versailles. Some of the things that the treaty said were that Germany had to take full responsibility of causing the war and to pay for repairs that some countries needed after the war.
