  • Rice takes C-USA title; gets regional

    HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Rice captured the Conference USA tournament title with an 8-6 victory over Southern Miss.
    After not winning the C-USA regular-season title, the Owls extended their streak of conference championships to 14 straight years.
    “We’re always fighting for a win whenever we take the field whether a championship is on the line or not," Rice junior catcher Diego Seastrunk said
    The Owls were selected as a regional site for the NCAA tournament.
  • Owls not among eight national seeds

    For the first time since 2005, the Owls were not named a national top-eight seed in the NCAA baseball tournament.
    “I thought the odds were not particularly good,” coach Wayne Graham said.
    The eight national seeds are Texas, Cal State Fullerton, LSU, North Carolina, Arizona State, Cal Irvine, Oklahoma and Florida.

    Houston Regional: Owls topple Sam Houston State
    Rice beats Sam Houston State, 5-2
    Chad Mozingo went 3-for-4, and Mike Ojala tossed seven strong innings to lead Rice to a 5-2 victory over Sam Houston State in the Houston Regional.
    The victory gave the Owls their 15th consecutive 40-win season.
    “I think (Sam Houston) is the toughest No. 4 seed in the country, so we’re happy to get out with a win,” Rice coach Wayne Graham said.

    Kansas State ace A.J. Morris threw a complete game as the Wildcats ended Rice's 13-game regional winning streak 7-6 at Reckling Park.
    “Obviously it was a disappointing loss,” Rice coach Wayne Graham said. “I thought our guys battled back well. We made some mental mistakes that were surprising. That happens. "
    The Owls had won their past 13 consecutive NCAA regional games. The last time they lost in a regional was in 2004 against Texas A&M.
