Joins Chicago offices of Carter, Drake and Wright
After failing admissions tests to both Harvard and Yale and an unsuccessul go at politics, Burnham joins the offices of Carter, Drake and Wright in Chicago. It is here that he meets his future partner, John Wellborn Root. -
World's Fair
Burnham is the mastermind behind the construction for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago's Jackson Park on the south lakefront. -
Starts Plan of Chicago
Burnham and his assistant, Edward H. Bennett begin the Plan of Chicago. The plan included six major aspects, one being a community park along the the shores of Lake Michigan. -
The Great Earthquake
Three days prior to the great earthquake, Burnham submitted his urban design plan for San Franciso. It was never implemented. -
The City Enacts the Plan of Chicago
The city of Chicago enacts Burnham's plan, allowing the government to select a committee of 328 men to oversee the implementation of the socially conscious plan. -
