Columbus believed he could reach Asia by sailing west instead of east around Africa. So, he convinced Queen Isabella to finance his expedition. In October of 1492 he reached the West Indies but he thought he was in Asia and kept exploring. He explored Cuba, Carribian Islands, Honduras, and Hispaniola. -

Treaty of Tordesillas
Spain and Portugal thought others might claim some of their discoveries so they resolved the concerns with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas. This treaty made a line of demarcation from north to south through the Atlantic Ocean and easternmost part of the South American continent. Aztecs' Defeat
A Sanish force under the command of Hernán Cortés landed at Veracruz, on the Fulf of Mexico. He made alliences while he marched. The Spanish had a great advantage in fighting with the many weapons they had. The Spanish took Montezuma hostage and pillaged the city. In the fall of 1520, the local population revolted and drove the invaders from the city... Many Spanish was killed. -

Ferdinand Magellans' Circumnavigation
Magellan prsuaded the king of Spain to finance his voyage to Asia through the Western Hemisphere. He set sail in Sep 1519 down the coast of S. America in search of a sea passage through Amrica... in 1520 he passes through a waterway(straight of magellan) and then killed by the Natives. He didn't actually finish his voyage but one of his ships returned so he was remembered as the first person to circumnavigate the globe. -

Peace of Augsburg
An end to religious warfare in Germany. It formally accepted the divistion of Chrisianity in Germany so they were now free to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism. Also, the right of German rulers to determine the reigion of their subjects was accepted but not the subjects' right to choose their own religion. -

The first Dutch fleet had arrived in India in 1595... shortly after, the Dutch formed the East India Company and began competing with the Enlish and Portuguese for Indian Ocean trade. Also they formed their own West India Company to compete with the Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas. -
