Ruby's Background
On this day Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi. She moved to New Orleans with her parents when she was four. She did not know what was ahead of her six years ahead of her in 1960. -
Ruby's Walk to School
On this day, Ruby Bridges was escorted to William Frantz Elementary by Federal Marshalls. They walked through a crowd of angry whites hollering and calling Ruby mean names. But before Ruby walked through the crowd and met the Federal Marshalls, she prayed before the gates to William Frantz Elementary. -
Ruby Meets the Teacher
Once Ruby got into the school and walked into the classroom, she sat down front and center. All of the white parents took their kids out of Ruby's class. The teacher introduced herself as Miss Hurley. Miss Hurley was white, but looked past Ruby's black skin. Together, the two of them, spent the whole year together. Later on, Miss Hurley got married. She was then Mrs.Henry. -
Ruby and her Comitment
In January, Ruby was being escorted through the mob of angry whites, but she realized she had forgotten to pray. Ruby stopped in the middle of the crowd and prayed. Once she got in the classroom, Mrs.Henry asked why she had stopped. Ruby said that she was praying. Mrs.Henry asked, "For what?"
Ruby said that she was praying for all of the rude and mean whites and that they would be nice someday. -
Ruby's Impact
By the time Ruby entered the 2nd grade at William Frantz Elementary, the formerly segregated school, was successfully integrated. There were no more protests, and Ruby was able to go to school un-escorted. Also, a couple of other black kids joined her class, and finally she had friends.
