EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
The Emancipation Proclamation is an executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War under his war powers. It proclaimed the freedom of 3.1 million of the nation's 4 million slaves, and immediately freed 50,000 of them, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced. -
GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
Delivered during the Civil War dedicating the Soldier's National Cemetary. He wanted the "birth of a new freedom" that would bring equality to all citizens. He wanted a stronger union. "Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." -

King's delivery of the speech was on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. -
