Sugar Act of 1764
This put a three-cent tax on foreign refined sugar. It also put a higher tax on coffee, indigo, and some kinds of wine. This started to caused the merchants to get upset for over-priced taxes. -
Stamp Act of 1765
The British Parliment imposed direct tax on any type of stamped paper. -
Townshend Acts of 1767
The Townshend Acts of 1767 put tax on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. This upset the colonists even more than the other acts. In result of the colonists violent protests, the British sent more troops to the colonies. -
Boston Massacre
On the night of March 8th, the colonists started to harass the British guards. They soon started to throw rocks and snowballs at them. A British started to shoot and at the end of the night six colonists were dead. This was one of the causes of the Revolutionary War. -
Tea Act of 1773
The British told the Colonists that they were only allowed to buy tea from only one company. They saw this as "taxation without representation." This led to the Boston Tea Party. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was an effect from the outrage of the colonists at the Tea Act, which inflicted tax on tea. The colonists dressed up as Indians and dumped three ships worth of valuable tea overboard. -
Intolerable Acts
The Interable Acts was a series of laws that were passed by the British Parliament. These acts angered the colonists causing a revolt. Evenually resulting in America's Independence. -
First Continental Congress
Delegates assembled at Philadephia's Carpenters Hall. Twelve of the thirteen colonies sent delegates. They wanted to right the wrongs that were imposed on the colonies. -
Declaration of Rights
Delegates from the colonies met in Philadelphia to declare our next move. -
Lexington and Concord
In Middlesex County, Massachusetts the British started to march through Lexington to get to Concord where the colonists had a stash of weapons. No one knows who fired first, but eventually the Americans had to retreat. Though they had to retreat, they were ready at Concord. In the end they fought the British off successfully. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
This was a two-day battle that happened on Breed's Hill. The Americans were trying to protect the shipyard of nearby Boston but they had to retreat quickly because they ran out of amunition. -
Olive Branch Petition
Writen by John Dickinson, this was a document stating that the colonists didn't want any more blood shed. The King refused it, thus starting the revolt of the colonists. -
Second Continental Congress
The delegates met again. This is because the armed forces were very disorganized and things were not going very smoothly. They then appointed George Washington to be in charge of the continental army. -
Battle of New York
This battle was important because whoever captured New York would control the trading. -
Decleration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th but signed on October 8th. This is a historic document stating our freedom from Britian. -
Battle of Brandywine Creek
A British flanking movement trapped nearly the entire American army. The British won and the took Philadelphia two weeks later. -
British captured Philedalphia
The British successfully take over Philadelphia two weeks after winning the Battle of Brandywine Creek. -
British Capture Charlestown
The British take Charlestown after four weeks of seige. -
Battle of Yorktown
Geogre Washington has finally won a battle, and this is a main turning point in the war. -
Treaty of Paris (ending Revolutionary War)
This officially stated America's freedom from Britian. Under the new terms, Britain understood that the United States was a free country now. It said that Britian has to remove all of their troops and set up new borders for America.
