    Korean Conflict

    KoreaIt all starts when Korea splits in two by rival forces. They come to an agreement to split at the 38 degree latitude. This creates North Korea and South Korea. But the North invade the south in 1950. They halt around Pusan. Fall of 1950 rolls around and the UN lands in Inch'on and South Korea push all the way back up to the Yalu River. China doesn't like this push and enter the war and push South Korea back down to the 37 degree latitude. In January 1951 the UN advance to the 38 degree latitude.

    NATO
    The NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada and ten other countries. This was a new military alliance that stated that members pledged to help one another if any one of them were attacked.

    Nuclear Arms Race and Detente

    Nuclear Arms RaceThe Soviet Union had to keep up with the United States with military missles so they developed nuclear weapons. New develops happened in 1953 when both sides invented hydrogen bombs which can destroy more. To try and calm things down the United States and the Soviet Union began to talk about limiting the number of nuclear weapons. They finally signed the agreement in 1972 and 1979. Finally in 1991 the two sides signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty of START.

    Chinese Civil War
    Right after World War II China and thier leader Mao Zedong fought a civil war against Nationalists headed by Jiang Jieshi. This set up the People's Republic of China. China was now under Communist control. This mainly worked because Mao had a ton of support from peasants. Then they just started taking more and more things away from the Nationalists.

But in 1961 East Germany built a wall to block of the west and the fighting. This showed that workers had no option in leaving

    Communist Cuba

    Communist CubaFidel Castro created a rebllious group to currupt the dictator who then ruled Cuba. Cstro had attacked guerrilla style, winning and set about transforming the country in 1959. The United States whants to get involved and attempts to bring down the communist regime next door. President Kennedy supports these acts of invasion by U.S.-trained Cuban Exiles. This is later know as the Bya of Pigs Invasion.

    Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact included the Solviet Union and seven satelites. This pact was often called apon by the Soviet Union just to keep the satelites in order. It was divided by the "Eastern" and the "Western" blocs.

    Vietnam Conflict

    Vietnam ConflictsAfter 1954, Vietnam became part of the Cold War. They agreed to temporary division of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh created a communist government while Ngo Dinh Diem of the west was supported by the United States. In the 60's communist guerrilla fighters had apperared in the Jungles of South Vietnam. Its now 1964 and South Vietnamese commandos conducted raid on North Vietnamese Islands in the Gulf of Tonkin. Over all of this more than 500,000 american troops were sent over to fight.     The Soviet Union shipped nuclear weapons to Cuba. President Kennedy didn't like this idea so he created a naval blockade around cuba and demanded the soviets to remove the missiles. Finally on October 28 the leader of the Soviet Union agreed to remove the Soviet Missiles

    Eastern European Independence

    Eastern European IndependenceHungary wanted a modest economic reform, so they expanded their economy and criticized the communist government. Finally in 1988 the communsity government allowed greater feedoms. Berlin then becomes one again with the Berlin wall coming down in 1989. The last event happened in 1992 when the Slovaks and Czechs peacefully agreed to divide Czechosloviakia into new nations of Slovakia and Czech Republic.

    DetenteAfter the United States and Soviet Union reached agreement about arms race this created an era known as Detente. This created a relaxation of tention. American goal was to stop the Soviets from attacking military style but by diplomatic ways. Unfortunitly in 1979 the agreement ended when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

    Soviets in Afghanistan
    The Soviet becomes involves with the long war in Afghanistan. The Aftghan government tried to modernize the nation and this made Soviet troops to move in. Battling the Mujahedin proved to be very difficult as fighting guerrillas in the jungles of Vietnam had been for the Americans. Soviet eventually pulled out later in 1985 under a new leader.

    When Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in the Soviet Union the economy was in bad shape. When the Soviets fall it is still in that possition. In 1991 the remaining Soviet republics separated to form 12 independent nations in addition to the three Baltic States. After 69 long years the Soviet Union had ceased to exist.
