koreaKorea started as divided at the 38th parallel. Then in summer North Korea invaded South Korea. In the fall the South Koreans invaded the north. In the early winter the Chinese helped the Koreans to push the south back. In January the UN advanced back to the 38th parallel. In 1953 a demilitarized zone was in the middle with no military forces. -

NATO also known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This pact was formed by the United States, Canada, and ten other countries. It pledged to help any country that signed the treaty if they were attacked. -

Communism in China was facing the Nationalists. The Communists were headed by Mao Zedong and the Nationalists by Jiang Jieshi. Mao had the peasants on his side which led him to the win in China making the country communist. -

VietnamThe U.S. entered the war after the Frencht left, for fear of the domino theory that if there is a communist victory in Vietnam then other noncommunist countries will turn to communism. The Communist part of Vietnam was run by Ho Chi Minhhe tried to unite both parts under communist rule. VIet Cong was communist rebels trying to overthrow South Vietnam's government. Vietnam conflict part 2
vietnamdestroyer called the Maddox. August 7 was when congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which led the U.S. to start bombing targets in the north. In this war there was a lot of guerrilla warfare, such as on the New Year of Tet guerrilla forces went and attacked southern cities and America. This caused the Tet Offensive changing the minds of the Americans back at home. In January of 1973 Nixon negotiated the Paris Peace Accord which terminated American involvement in the war. -
Warsaw Pact
This pact was formed by the Soviets. This also included seven satellites in Eastern Europe. This act was often ressorted to so that the satellites were kept in order. -
Communist Cuba
Fidel Castro set about transforming the country called the Cuban Revotution. He changed the country to communism by seeking out support from the Soviet Union. This took away the people's political freedom, some were jailed or silenced so hundreds of thousands fled to Florida. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was built by the East Germans to keep the West Germans out and also preventing East Germans to escape from communism. This wall was patrolled by guards, it also had barbed wire, it was made of concrete. -
Missiles Crisis
This crisis started whe the Soviets sending nuclear missles to Cuba. President Kennedy sent a blockade in defense. It was demanded that the Soviets remove the missles. Finally Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev removed the missles averting the chance of war. -

DetenteAn era of relaxation that happened during the nuclear arms race. This happened in the 1970s between the Soviets and Americans. This kept the Soviet Union under diplomatic reasons. This ended in 1979 when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. -
Soviets in Afghanistan
The Soviets became involved in this war because they supported the government wanting to modernize the country. This would include new reforms that would effect the Afghan landlords who wished to keep the Islamic traditions the same. This then became a religious battle including the mujahedin or religious warriors. Americans then smuggled weapons in to assist the warriors, this hurt the Soviets in war and their morale at home. -
The Fall of the Soviet Union
At this time Mikhail Gorbachev was in charge of the Soviet Union He made two reforms one called glasnost which also meant opennes this ended censorship allowing the people to speak freely about how they didn't like communism. The other was called perestroika this made structural reforms to the economy and government. This all led to the fall of the Soviet Union because it gave the people more freedom.
