10 significant literacy moments/experiences

  • First Storytime Experience 2007

    As a young child , my parents often read to me every night before bed. one specific night my mom read "where the wild things are' by maurice sendak. this moment sparked my imagination and love for storytelling. I vividly remember being captivated by the illustrations and the narrative. This experience laid the foundation for my appreciation of books.
  • learning to Read 2009

    In kindergarten , I began learning to read with phonics programs. I remember mastering my first set of sight words and the excitement that came with reading my first book independently. "The Cat in the hat" by Dr. Seuss. This achievement boosted my confidence and motivated me to read more.
  • Public speaking

    In third grade, I had to present a short report on my favorite animal in front of the class. I was terrified, but I prepared wisely. This experience taught me the importance of organization and clarity in speaking although I stumbled over my words I received positive feedback and learned the value of public speaking
  • Joining the school book club

    During middle school, I joined the school book club that focused on creative writing. It was here that I was able to learn more about writing and receiving constructive criticism helped me shape my writing.
  • Struggling with writing

    In eighth grade, I faced challenges with writing essays and a harsh review from a teacher made me doubt my writing skills. The negative experience pushed me to seek and develop better writing skills from the book club. I learned to appreciate revision and the writing process.
  • High school theater

    Participating in the school theater program was transformative not only that I learned the art of performance, but I also honored my skills in reading and interpreting scripts. This experience improved my verbal skills and boosted my confidence in speaking publicly.

    We had a project to write a two page essay. This experience was tricky and stressful, but it
    taught me the importance of revising your work and Writing using proper grammar.
  • Volunteering as a tutor

    While in high school I had the opportunity to volunteer as a student as a tutor for underprivileged kids , helping them with their reading and writing challenges, deepened my understanding of literacy, importance and education, seeing their improvement, reinforced my belief in the power of literacy and increased my patience and empath.

    In my freshman year of college, I received critical feedback on a research paper for my writing professor initially, I was heartbroken, but I took the time to understand his insights This moment taught me to embrace feedback, constructively, and develop a critical eye for my writing.
  • Getting an A on my research paper

    I got my first A on my research paper. This was very exciting for me, especially to see that all my hard work had paid off from somebody who couldn’t even read at first to getting an A on a college research paper. I was extremely proud of myself!
