10 significant literacy moments

  • 8 months

    At 8 months I started saying my first word baba as I heard what my family is saying to me.
  • 1 year

    Listen to the Islamic bedtime stories read to me by my parents. They also taught me small prayers at nighttime when I was going to bed. I was only listening at that age.
  • 3 years

    Reading Holy Quran Arabic alphabets, Urdu and English alphabets and words taught to me by mother who was also a teacher.
  • 5 years

    Started going to school but before that my mother taught me how to grab a pencil, she wrote alphabets, and I trace the letters. I know how to write my name and started reading small picture books with few words in it. I remember I have a wooden board with a special writing tool to improve my handwriting skills. I wrote small words from the book which help me to read and understand.
  • 5th grade

    I started reading big novels, fiction and nonfiction books. My passion for reading was that much that even I visited someone with my parents I was searching for books to read at their house and sit at a corner for long time reading while my family members were engaged talking. I remember I was so much engaged in reading that I can't noticed the background noises and it didn't bother.
  • 7th Grade

    My English teacher always encourage us to read to improve our literacy skills. We were assigned with some reading materials which we had to complete at a certain time and then summarize the important details from the text. He paid much attention on handwriting too.
  • High School

    Most part of my schooling took place in Pakistan where I was also reading Urdu textbooks and writing long assignments. Not typing on computers.
  • 11th Grade

    I took Urdu Literature in 11th grade, and I was very inspired by my Urdu teacher as she was a writer and a poet which encouraged me to read more poetry and different genres of Urdu literature. We also had to read different poems of the popular poet of the Indo-Pak subcontinent and summarize the couplets in our own thoughts.
  • Senior College

    In my senior year of college, I had English literature, and it was also very motivational because of my English language teacher. She was very focused on reading and sharing our thoughts about the writing material with proficiency and accurate accent. We had small group activities about different genres of English literature to enhance our reading and speaking with confidence.
  • English-121

    I took Eng-121 which was different from the classes I had back home. This class improved my critical thinking about an article and develops my writing skills in rhetorical analysis and argumentative writing. Develops my understanding of reading and writing essays.
