    Between 1534 and 1542, a man named Jacques Cartier set off to Canada by boat and approached the eastern shore.
  • United States slaves escape to Canada

    Thornton and Lucy Blackburn were slaves in Kentucky, when they escaped to Detroit and settled. They escaped a second time, to Canada, after their owner tried to track them down and take them back. The Canadian court system refused to take them back to the United States. So, Throrton and Luccy Blackburn had freedom and was safe from their owner. This event took place sometime between 1619-1865.
  • Slave hung for being accused of starting a fire

    A slave named Marie-Joseph Angelique was accused of starting a fire in 1734 that destroyed 46 buildings. The fire took place in the Provence of Montreal, Canada. She only confessed to the crime under torture and was hung on June 21, 1734
  • William Hall-first African-American person to receive the Victoria Cross

    William Hall was the first African-American person to receive the Victoria Cross. He was awarded the Cross after securing a British Garrison while serving on the HMS Shannon ship. He was one of two sailors left, and the only one able to fight. He was a Canadian citizen before he served. William Hall died in 1904 at the age of 77.

  • The inventor who created the patented telephone in Canada

    Alexander Graham Bell was Scottish born, but invented the telephone in Canada in the 1870's. He also founded the Bell Telephone Company that many Canadian residents still use.

    A woman named Amelia Douglas lived in the area we know as Canada. She is one of the most well known woman within the fur trade. Amelia died in 1890, at the age of 78.
  • Canadian man's poem about the war goes famous

    John McCrae was a doctor that healed the wounded during World War l. John also had an artistic side and wrote many famous poems. During the war, he wrote a poem titled "In Flanders Fields" which soon went famous after the war. His poem captures the realistic feelings of the tragic war. John was born in the year 1872 in Guelph, Ontario. He died in 1918 in Boulogune, France.
  • First Canadian to win the Nobel Prize

    Dr. Frederick Banting improved the lives of thousands when his medical research led to the creation of a synthetic insulin for diabetes. In 1923, he was awarded with a Nobel prize and became the first Canadian to receive one.
  • Viola Desmond stood up against segregated laws

    In 1946, Viola Davis Desmond refused to sit on the balcony at Roseland Theater in New Glasgow, N.S. And sat in the lower floor seats that were reserved for white people. She got arrested and put in jail. She died in 1965 at the age of 50. Later, in 2010, the government apologized to Viola's family. Viola now appears on a stamp printed in Canada.

    Marc Garneau joined the Canadian space program in 1983. In the year of 1984, he became the first Canadian in outer space. He served as crew on the U.S. Shuttle Mission, and in 2008, he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal representing Quebec, Canada.
