Rape of Nanking
Half of the 600,000 soldiers and civilians were murdered. 90,000 of Chinese who surrended were transported to a remote location and used for live bayonet practice, decapitation, mowed down by machine gun fire, and burned alive. -
Ribbentrop/Molotov Pact
Nonaggressive pact between USSR and Germany. It was made to keep Russia out of the war until they were ready to fight. -
Germany's invasion of Poland
Germany invaded Poland's borders along with bombing their airfields. Nazi leader hitler said it was an act of defense. Surrounding countries thought otherwise. Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3, initiating WWII. -
German Blitzkrieg
It was a military tactic designed to create disorganization among enemy forces through the use of mobile forces and localy concentrated firepwer. It was first used in Poland in 1939 and then successfully employing the tactic with invasions of Belgium, the Netherlands, France in 1940. Also used in the North African campaign of WWII, and was adopted by U.S. General George Patton for his army's European operations. -
Fall of Paris
Germany invaded Paris on June 14, 1940. Hitler wanted to complete world domination, but needed to start off with France. This caused trade between U.S.,Germany, and Italy. -
Operation Barbarossa
Hitler launched his troops into the Soviet Union territory. THe invasion covered a distance of two thousand miles from the North Cape to the Black Sea. It was a crucial turning point in WWII, for it forces Nazi Germany to fight a two-front war against the Aliies. -
Pearl Harbor
Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the american naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. The attack lasted only a mere two hours. This attack destroyed nearly 20 naval vessels and almost 200 airplanes. Over 2000 American soldiers and sailors died , and another 1000 were wounded. It cause America to join WWII. -
Wannsee Conference
Nazi party and German government officials gathered at a villa in the Berlin suburbs of Wannsee. They discussed what they called "Final Solution of the Jewish Question". -
Battle of Midway
WWII naval battle fought of almost entirely with aircrafts in which the United States destroyed Japan's first-line carrier strength and most of its best trained naval pilots. It basically ended the Japanese invasion of the Pacific Islands. -
Operation Gomorrah
British aircrafts dropped 2,300 tons of incenidary bombs on Hamburg in just a few hours. This was a payback attack from when Germany bombed London. -

The last and the largest Pacific Ocean island battle of WWII. Almost 300,000 American troops against 130,000 japanese troops. The U.S. invaded because the needed to capture the air base vital to invading the mainland. -

Great Britain and United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day in honor of defeating nazi Germany. -

United States wanted to bring the war to end quickly and without losing anymore soldiers. They also wanted to introduce the Soviet Union to their new weapons of mass destruction. -
VJ Day
Victory over Japan day was celebrated because of the Japans surrender to the United States.
