Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany
After Hitler became the chancellor of Germany, Hitler used his position to achieve a dictatorship, partly by building on reports of a supposed Communist conspiracy against the state. Hindenburg, the president who elected Hitler, died in August 1934 and Hitler was proclaimed Fuhrer of the German Reich, head of state and commander of the armed forces. Hitler gained dictatorial power over Germany.

Germany Invades Poland
Hitler claimed that by conquering Poland that it would bring Lebensraum, or “living space,” for the German people. Hitler invaded Poland claiming it was a defensive action, but Britain and France were not convinced. This act resulted in the start of WWII because France and Britain declared war on Germany.

Winston Churchill becomes leader of British Government
On May 10, 1940, Churchill became the prime minister of the British Government. Churchill formed an all-party coalition and immediately won the popular support of Britons. Britain stood alone against Nazi Party, but Churchill promised his country and the world that the British people would never give up or surrender and they never did.

Italy Enters War
Italy entered World War II on the Axis side on June 10, 1940. In July 1940, just weeks after the France was defeated, Hitler decided that Nazi Party would attack the Soviet Union the following spring. Benito Mussolini was the leader of the Soviet Union at the time. He was a fascist.

The Battle of Britain started on Jul 10, 1940 and lasted till Oct 31, 1940. It was when the successful defense of Great Britain against destructive air raids that were conducted by the German air force. Axis Powers break Non-Aggression Pact
On June 22, 1941, The German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact fell apart. German chancellor Hitler used the pact to be certain that Germany was able to invade Poland unopposed. The pack contained a secret agreement in which Italy and Germany agreed how they would later divide up Eastern Europe.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was on December 7, 1941. It was a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base by the Japanese that precipitated the entry of the United States into World War II. By late 1941, the United States had severed practically all relations with Japan.

Bataan Death March
It was a march in the Philippines of some 66 miles that 76,000 prisoners of war (66,000 Filipinos, 10,000 Americans) were forced by the Japanese military to endure during the early stages of WWII.
The captives were beaten and tortured. A large number of those who made it to the camp died from starvation or disease.

Battle of Coral Sea
The Japanese wanted control of the Coral Sea, but their plans were intercepted by the Allied forces. When the Japanese landed, they were attacked by the aircraft carrier planes of the American task force. The allied forces won strategically.

Battle of Midway

Italy surrenders to Allies

1st Liberation of Concentration Camps

Liberation of Paris
After about four years of Nazi occupation, Paris is liberated by the French 2nd Armored Division and the U.S. France signed an armistice with the Germans. Allied troops could now virtually sweep into Paris unopposed. Many fighters died in the struggle for Paris Once the city was free from German rule, French collaborators were often killed upon capture.

Battle of Iwo Jima
The American amphibious invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II stemmed from the need for a base near the Japanese coast. Many Japanese tried to defend Iwo Jima.
