Archduke Francis Ferdinand Assassinated
*On June 28, 1914, then, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were touring Sarajevo in an open car, with surprisingly little security.
*Then a Serbian nationalist Nedjelko Cabrinovic threw a bomb at their car; it rolled off the back of the vehicle and wounded an officer and some bystanders. -
Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
*This event happend one month after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo.
*This effectivly began the first world war. -
Germany Declares War on France
*Germany declares war on France, moving ahead with a long-held strategy.
*This strategy was conceived by the former chief of staff of the German army, Alfred von Schlieffen, for a two-front war against France and Russia. -
Germany Declaires War on Russia

Germany Invades Belgium
*The German government wrote to the Belgian government demanding the right of free passage across Belgium for its troops.
*Belgium denied the writen letter so Germany took action and invaded them. -
Germany Announces Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
*Unrestricted submarine warfare was first introduced in World War I in early 1915.
*German torpedo-armed submarines prepared to attack any and all ships, including civilian passenger carriers, said to be sighted in war-zone waters. -
Germany U-Boat Sinks the Lusitania
*Germany waged submarine warfare against the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
*The ship was identified and torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 and sank in 18 minutes. -
The Zimmerman Note is Discovered
- The Zimmermann Note was sent encrypted on Jan. 16, 1917. *When the president and the American people learned of the contents of the Zimmerman Telegram, they were irate.

U.S. Declares War on Germany
*Two days after the U.S. Senate voted 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the declaration by a vote of 373 to 50, and America formally enters World War I.
*Congress passed a $250 million arms appropriations bill intended to make the United States ready for war. -
The Russian Monarchy is Overthrown
*Russia's Bolshevik Revolution took place as forces led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrew the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky.
*The provisional government came to power after the February Revolution resulted in the Russian monarchy being overthrown in March 1917.
