    From the time he entered Congress in 1914, Carl Vinson was an advocate for a strong United States Navy. Known as the “father of the two ocean navy,” Vinson spent most of his political career convincing his fellow congressman on the importance of military in the twentieth century. . He served as chairman of the House Naval Affairs Committee. He increased the size of the Navy by 70%.

  • Brunswick Shipyard

    Brunswick was one of sixteen ports chosen to construct cargo vessels that would aid Allied forces in Europe. After the U.S. declared war, these cargo vessels, called “Liberty Ships,” were churned out at incredible speed. The 16,000 workers at the Brunswick shipyards built 99 ships, 85 of them Liberty Ships, from 1941-1945. They were capable of hauling thousands of tons of cargo across the Atlantic Ocean.

    It was a program under which the United States supplied Free France, the United Kingdom, the Republic of China, and later the USSR and other Allied nations with food, oil, and materiel between 1941 and August 1945. This included warships and warplanes, along with other weaponry. They selled it for cheap.

    It produced 88 ships. They hired a lot of women and african americans. Savannah was the other site in Georgia chosen for Liberty Ship construction.

    It is a corporation that made a production factory in marrietta. There, the B 29 bombers were made. This helped assist the creation of the B-29 Superfprtress. The factory provided a lot of jobs.
  • D-Day

    Allied troops planned an attack on the beaches on Normandy. A lot of people died but it wa successful because they had the advantage. They pushed the Nazis out of Normandy.
  • Yalta Conference

    The Allies realize they are going to win. FDR, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin discuss how they are going to defeat Germany, how they are going to prepare for post-war, and the territories and money. The US got a lot of money.
  • Hitler's Death

    He committed suicide with his wife by swallowing cyanide. In case the cyanide didn't work, he shot himself. Hitler killed himself due to the increasingly dire situation for Nazi Germany
  • Hiroshima

    The US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima because they knew that they were going to win and wanted to make a statement. This was the first atomic bomb to ever be revealed. The radiation and stuff affected Japan fro about 30 years.
  • Nagasaki

    Another atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. It was after Hiroshima.
  • United Nations is formed

    It was founded to replace the league of nations. It was created in order to stop another conflict like this to happen. World peackeeping organization.
  • Richard Russel

    He was first a state Representative. He became a governer and then the us senate. During the war, he was erving on the Naval Afairs Comitee.
