1935 Hitler
During 1935, Adolf Hitler the newly elected prime minister of Germany began to defy the Treaty of Versailles. He declared that he would begin to expand his military again, in clear violation of the Treaty. -

Created on November 15, 1920, this city-state was not protected by the Treaty of Versailles and was an often debated topic which was a focal point of Germany. Germany wanted the city to become apart of Germany so it could be used as a strategic point of war. -

Western European countries remained quiet about Germany and stayed out of the war. Britain called it a "Bore War" while Americans called it a "Phony War." -
Invasion of France
Germany launched an invasion of Belgium and Luxembourg. They did so to easily move around France's Maginot Line. This line of defense was composed of concrete bunkers that ran along all of France's border with Germany. Once German forces were through Belgium and Luxembourg, they marched into France. -
Evacuation at Dunkirk
The Allied Powers staged a huge rescue of nearly 340,000 troops that were traped by the invading German forces in a port in northern France known as Dunkirk. -
