Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was when Germany attacked Britain by bombing certain airfields and then bombing selectively chosen places in Britain. Germany did this because they wanted to crush the British morale and get rid of their last enemy. The significance of the Battle of Britain was that it was the first time that Germany was ever defeated in WWII. -
Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. 2,900 km were wiped out, 4,000 aircrafts were destroyed, and 600,000 people were killed, captured, and/or wounded. This happened in the Soviet Union. It happened because Hitler wanted to defeat communism to take over USSR for slave labor. -
Pearl Harbor
The attack of Pearl Harbor was when Japan bombed the U.S. military naval base in Oahu, HI. 2,400 U.S. are dead, 2 U.S. ships are sunk, and multiple ships and planes are destroyed. This happened because Japan was upset that the U.S. had stopped traded with them and had froze money assists of Japan in U.S. banks. The significance of this event was that it was the day U.S. declares war on Japan and joins WWII. "A day that will live in infamy." --FDR -
Bataan Death March
The Bataan Death March was when 75,000 American and Filippino POWs marched in this death march. This march was characterized by the murder and abuse that the POWs dealt with. 6,000-11,000 men died in this march. This march happened in the Philippines. This happened because abandoned troops surrenedered at Bataan. Japanese forced these POWs to march to a prison campl. 1,000s of Americans and Filippinos died during this. It is significant because it was the largest surrender in American history. -
Operation Overlord
During Operation Overlord, bombs were dropped on the French Coast on the Beaches in Normandy. 7,000 ships were involved in the invasion. This happened to end WWII and the Nazi's power over Europe. The outcome of this event was that the Allies got a hold on the North of France. It was the turning point of WWII because it began the freeing of France and led to the defeat of the German war machin. This then resulted to the end of WWII in Europe. -
Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference involved the U.S. the UK and the Soviet Union. The 3 leaders were presented at this conference to discuss how to rebuild Europe. This happened in Yalta, Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine. This happened because the 3 leaders needed to discuss what would happen after victory. They were in fear of Hitler and they agreed on issues. This is a signifact time in history becuase the allies agreed to some things such as charging Germany for war repairs and the SU entering war against Japan. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima was when the U.S. was fighting of the Iwo Jima from Japan. This happened on the island of Iwo Jima. It happened becausethe U.S. wanted to attack it to get closer to Japan in order to attack it easier. The significance of this battle was it was when the U.S. gained control over Japan. -
V-E Day
On V-E Day (Victory in Europe) the Germans surrendered. This happened in Europe and it happened because the Nazis surrendered by singing the instrument of surrender. The significane of V-E was that the war was over in Europe. -
Dropping the Atomic Bomb
The U.S. dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This happened becasue the U.S. wanted to get Japan to surrender. The outcome of this event was that the war was ended the war with Japan and ended WWII. -
V-J Day
On V-J Day, Japan surrendered to the U.S. This happened aboard the U.S.S. Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay. This happened because the atomic bomb caused them to surrender. The significance of this day was that Japan had surrendered and WWII came to a final end. -
Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge was when the Germans attacked a weak area of the allied lines. It happened in the Ardennes Forest. It happened because Hitler wanted to break up the alliance between Britain, France, and U.S.A. The signigicance of this battle was that it was the last German offensive for WWII.
